Trump: Attorney General William Barr leaving position 'just before Christmas'

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- President Trump on Monday afternoon announced that Attorney General William Barr will be leaving his post "just before Christmas."

Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen will assume the role of Acting Attorney General, Trump said.

"Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House," Trump tweeted. "Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job! As per letter, Bill will be leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family."

He added, "Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen, an outstanding person, will become Acting Attorney General. Highly respected Richard Donoghue will be taking over the duties of Deputy Attorney General. Thank you to all!"

Trump was highly critical of Barr when he refused to back the president's claims of election fraud, despite a lack of evidence. But the campaign insists that Barr left on his own and not because of any pressure.

The NY Times reported tensions between the men escalated this past weekend when Trump "accused his attorney general of disloyalty for not publicly disclosing the department’s investigation into President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s son Hunter Biden during the campaign."

"Mr. Barr’s resignation allows him to avoid further confrontation with the president over his refusal to advance Mr. Trump’s attempts to rewrite the election results or his efforts to interfere in criminal inquiries into Mr. Biden’s family," the Times wrote.
