SAUGATUCK (WWJ) – A teenage girl visiting family on spring break in West Michigan has been rescued after climbing a tall tree and getting stuck over the weekend.

The 17-year-old climbed about 65 feet up a tree Sunday afternoon near Saugatuck, along the shores of Lake Michigan, according to a report from WOOD TV in Grand Rapids.

The Graafschap Fire Department was called out to 66th Street near Laketown Beach around 5:30 p.m., according to the report.

The girl had gone for a walk Sunday and when she didn’t return, her dad went looking for her and found her stuck in the tree. He tried to climb the tree, but the tree branch broke, so he called 911, WOOD TV reported.

Fire crews called Christopher Brennan, the owner of Ax Man Inc. -- a tree removal company in Saugatuck -- to help at the scene. He was driving and already had his climbing gear in his truck for emergencies.

He told WOOD TV he was able to get the girl secure in his harness and he was able to get her back to the ground while working in tandem with the fire department as they guided them down the tree.

He safely suspended himself up in the tree and once the girl was back on the ground he made his way down next, according to the report.

The girl told Brenna she was “kind of adventuring” when she got stuck, according to the report.

The entire rescue reportedly took about an hour.
