FLINT (WWJ) -- Leaders from General Motors joined Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other local officials on Monday morning to announce GM’s plans to invest more than $1 billion in two manufacturing plants in Flint.

The announcement comes as GM readies itself the future by investing in the plants ahead of the production of the next-generation internal combustion engine heavy-duty trucks — known as ICE.

“GM believes in Michigan and the continued investment in our state is a testament to our skill, experienced workforce and growing economy,” Gov. Whitmer said.

The Detroit automaker will invest $788 million for plant improvements at Flint Assembly that will include a general assembly conveyor expansion, body shop building expansion, as well as new tooling and equipment.

GM will also put $233 million into the Flint Metal Center for new equipment and upgrades.

The announcement comes as General Motors works toward its goal of building electric passenger vehicles exclusively by 2035 in the United States.
