The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team shares drone footage of 'once-in-a-generation' bridge construction [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - Officials shared stunning flyover footage of the latest construction efforts on the Gordie Howe Bridge's Canadian Port of Entry on Tuesday.

Bridge authorities posted the video captured by drone to YouTube, stating the project is a "once-in-a-generation undertaking."

"Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive," authorities said.

Construction on 11 structures on the Canadian Port of Entry (POE) is well underway, with underground utility installations currently being worked on across multiple areas of the 130 acre site.

According to officials, some POE buildings have progressed beyond excavation and foundation work and are now in the process of installing roofing, building façade, windows, drywall and interior rough-ins.

The buildings are beginning to take shape as seen in the flyover footage.

Set for completion in 2024, the bridge -- which is named for the late Red Wings legend -- will connect Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, south of Historic Fort Wayne in southwest Detroit.

Running one-and-a-half miles in length and spanning six-lanes, the project will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, according to officials.

It will be a third option for travel between Detroit and Windsor, along with the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge, and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) is a non-profit Canadian Crown corporation created to deliver the Gordie Howe International Bridge project between the two cities through a public- private partnership (P3).

"A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance," officials said.
