WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - The free bridge onto Grosse Ile is now open after being closed for several hours on Wednesday morning as crews inspected possible damage after a commercial vehicle hit the structure.

Grosse Ile Township officials closed the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge, often called the "free bridge," across part of the Detroit River around 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 13 before workers arrived to assess any damage.

According to authorities, an oversized load heading over the bridge "clipped" the historic swing truss.

Officials confirmed another truck struck the bridge on Tuesday, with witnesses on Facebook stating that they saw a box truck that was missing its roof and back door on the side of the road around 1 p.m.

The closure was in affect for just over two hours on Wednesday. The bridge was reopened just after 10 a.m.

"Inspectors were out and it has been opened at this time," township officials said. "We will update you as we get them if needed."

No other details were released.
