GROSSE POINTE (WWJ) -- A Grosse Pointe Woods man is behind bars, accused of shooting and killing his own brother.

Edmond Doheny, 29, has been charged with open murder and felony firearm in connection with the slaying last Friday.

According to Grosse Pointe Woods Police, officers responded to a home on Brys Drive, near 8 Mile Rd. and Mack Ave, just after 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 6.

They found the 19-year-old victim, Dennis Doheny, on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound in his "head area," prosecutors said. He was taken a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Doheny was arrested at the scene, and the murder weapon was found on the second floor of the house, according to authorities.

"This is yet another case of deadly interfamilial violence. This time it is allegedly brother upon brother,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement.

With an open murder charge, the jury at trial will determine whether first-degree murder or second-degree murder is appropriate under the facts and evidence. Second-degree carries a life sentence with the possibility of parole, while a first degree murder conviction means Doheny would spend the rest of his life in prison without parole.

Doheny was arraigned Monday morning in Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court and given a $1,000,000 cash/surety bond. He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for Oct. 18.

Prosecutors and police did not reveal the motive or circumstances around the shooting.
