WASHINGTON TWP. (WWJ) – Two people are in custody after a traffic stop for drifting onto the shoulder led to the discovery of an array of weapons in Macomb County early Sunday morning.

It all happened around 1:30 a.m. in Washington Township, just south of Romeo, when Michigan State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop after noticing a vehicle drifting onto the shoulder of M-53.

The troopers soon discovered the driver – a 24-year-old from Romeo – not only didn’t have insurance for the vehicle, but had multiple warrants for his arrest.

When troopers searched the car, they found a short-barreled rifle, belonging to the passenger, an 18-year-old Lapeer man.

Authorities also found two sets of brass knuckles and 12 double-edged daggers in the car.

The driver was turned over to the Imlay City Police Department on his warrants, while the passenger was held at the Macomb County Jail.

MSP officials did not release either suspect’s name and did not release any details about the driver’s previous warrants.

The case is pending prosecutor review.

“Troopers are continuing to look for, locate and seize illegal weapons during traffic stops.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. “By continuing to take these illegal guns off the street we are helping build a Michigan where everyone feels safe and secure.”
