HARPER WOODS (WWJ) -- A third murder charge has been filed against a Metro Detroit man who allegedly killed his mother, girlfriend and stepfather while free on bond.
This new charge comes after the death of Jonathan Welch's mother, who died at the hospital over the weekend. Flossie Bray, 42, was stabbed in the back several times with a butcher knife by Welch during an incident earlier this month.
At approximately 8:14 p.m. on July 10, in the 20640 block of Kenosha Street, 23-year-old Welch attacked his family inside his mother's house in Harper Woods.
Along with allegedly attacking his mother, he also killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Zlayiah Frazier, and his 70-year-old stepfather, Robert Bray, with blunt force trauma.
Harper Woods police were called to the scene to set up a perimeter around the home. While setting up the perimeter, officers located the defendant’s one-year-old son in the backyard of the home. Medics transported the child to a local hospital for treatment.
It is further alleged that Welch barricaded himself in the home and fired multiple gunshots at the officers before starting a fire inside and appearing in the front doorway.
Officers arrested him and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Members of the Grosse Pointe Woods Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire inside the home.
This incident happened just days after a bail agency helped him post bond in a domestic violence case where he was charged with torture and sexual assault of his girlfriend back in June.
Upon his release, Welch was ordered to live with his mother.
Welch has now been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of second-degree arson, seven counts of felonious assault and six counts of felony firearm.
He was arraigned on the first-degree murder count for his mother on Wednesday.
