MT. CLEMENS (WWJ) -- A Macomb County man is behind bars, accused of breaking into several cars, stealing radar detectors, and then selling them.

Last month, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Enforcement Team (SET) was notified by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau that 53-year-old Jeffery Tapert had been identified as a suspect in multiple thefts from vehicles in several communities in the county.

When SET began to conduct surveillance on Tapert, detectives allegedly witnessed him shatter the front driver side window of a Chevy Camaro, and then tried, unsuccessfully, to steal a radar detector from the dashboard.

Tapert, a resident of Harrison Township, was arrested without incident and charged with one count of Larceny from a Motor Vehicle, a five-year felony, and one count Malicious Destruction of Personal Property – less than $200, a 93-day misdemeanor.

He was arraigned in 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores, with bond set at $20,000 cash or surety.
