NOVI (WWJ) - Police confirmed one woman was killed and one man is in serious condition in Oakland County after a driver drifted across the centerline into on-coming traffic on Wednesday.
Novi Police Commander Christy Grunewald told WWJ reporter Sandra McNeill that a 55-year-old woman from Waterford died in the head-on collision just after 10 a.m. along Novi Road between 13 Mile and Old Novi Roads.
Grunewald said a 25-year-old Flint man was traveling northbound behind the wheel when his truck crossed into southbound traffic and collided with the Waterford woman's vehicle.
The woman died at the scene, Grunewald confirmed.
The 25-year-old man was taken to a local hospital where he was in serious condition upon intake. Grunewald said they do not have an update on his condition as of 5 p.m.
Police shut Novi Road down while they conducted an investigation.
Grunewald said it is unclear why the man crossed the centerline at this time, but police will pursue toxicology tests.
"Whenever we have a fatal crash like this, we always take into account all possible factors, so we don't have a definitive answer at this time," Grunewald told McNeill. "There was nothing specifically that was clear-cut to indicate that either way, but we are doing a thorough investigation to make determinations."
Grunewald did not release more information about the victim and said the woman's family had just been notified.
"It's absolutely a difficult situation," Grunewald added. "We go about our busy days and get up and we head out to do what it is -- if it's work or some errands that we are running or maybe heading to school -- and we just think it's going to be a standard day. You never think that when you part ways from your family or when you leave your house that this could be the end result."
"It's a very sad day for everyone involved," she said.
Grunewald has asked for anyone with information that can assist in the investigation to please contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
