Heat, thunderstorms on the way to metro Detroit Tuesday

**UPDATE — Tornadoes, flooding possible in severe storms set to strike metro Detroit Tuesday**]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(WWJ) Most students across metro Detroit will begin the new school year on Tuesday, and it looks like they may be greeted by some gloomy weather -- something the area grew accustomed to many times this summer.

AccuWeather says the day will start warm, bright and sunny with high temperatures approaching 85 degrees, but by later in the afternoon, things could turn a little darker.

"That warmth and a little bit more humidity will ignite some showers and thunderstorms, as a front approaches late in the day and continues into tomorrow night," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said live on WWJ.

DeVore says storms could bring damaging winds, big downpours and possibly an isolated tornado -- all things metro Detroiters dealt with on multiple occasions throughout the summer.

Many residents in the area found themselves looking at flooded basements or without power during the last few months, especially back at the start of the summer when storms on June 25 and 26 left parts of Detroit and the Grosse Pointe communities devastated by flooding.

Other storms throughout the summer brought winds approaching 80 mph, heavy downpours, and plenty of power outages. More than half-a-million DTE Energy customers were in the dark for several days after heavy storms in early August.
