Relentless rain flooding Metro Detroit freeways ahead of morning commute, Flood Warnings in effect for areas in Macomb, Wayne

(WWJ) - Heavy, relentless rain is causing flooding issues on major Metro Detroit freeways on Friday morning while Flood Warnings are in effect for several communities surrounding the Clinton and Ecorse Rivers.

The National Weather Service has issued Flooding Warnings for homes and businesses surrounding the Clinton River near Clinton Township affecting Macomb County and those near Ecorse Creek in Dearborn Heights affecting Wayne County.

In Macomb County, minor flooding is currently ongoing with water reach 16.1 feet at 6:30 a.m. Flood stage for the Clinton River is 16.0 feet.

The river is expected to crest on Friday morning before dropping back below flood stage later on in the afternoon. The Flood Warning runs until 12:45 p.m. with another statement on the river conditions expected to be released around the same time.

In the meantime, experts say residents should be aware of flood waters and avoid going through areas where water is covering the road.

"At 16.0 feet, some low spots on Millar Road flood," the NWS warned. "Water reaches the bottoms of the Garfield, Uitca and Hayes Road bridges. Low land flooding increases."

In Wayne County, moderate flooding was observed at the Ecorse River in Dearborn Heights, where the stage was at 8.2 feet -- flood stage for the river is 8.0 feet.

The NWS said the river should crest with water expected to overflow its banks on Friday morning and drop back below flood stage later in the day.

The Flood Warning runs from now until further notice.

The rounds of heavy rain are also making a mess of Metro Detroit freeways with I-96, I-94, I-696 and I-75 all experiencing problems as drivers hit the road for their morning commute.

As complied by WWJ traffic reporter Tina Sultini, the following locations are current problem spots where drivers are running into delays or slowdowns:

FLOODING: Westbound I-696 after The Lodge, left lane
FLOODING: Southbound I-75 at Eureka Road, only right lane open
Flooding: Westbound I-94 at W Grand Blvd., right lane blocked
Flooding: The eastbound -96 ramp at Beck Road
Flooding: The I-96 westbound express ramp to M-39, closed
FLOODING/CLOSED: Kelly Road between Groesbeck & 14 Mile

Tipster Gary told WWJ's Traffic Department that a two-vehicle crash that blocked the right lane on westbound I-94 at I-75 and Trumbull happened when one car hydroplaned on the flooded roadway.

The driver lost control and slammed into a second vehicle before they both came to rest in the right lane.
