DETROIT (WWJ) – Two of Michigan’s biggest health systems are joining forces.

Henry Ford Health announced Wednesday it has agreed to plans to begin a joint venture with Ascension Michigan, creating one $10.5 billion healthcare system based in Detroit with 13 hospitals and 550 regional healthcare sites.

While it’s not being described as a merger or an acquisition, the new organization will be branded as Henry Ford Health and will employ roughly 50,000 people. The transaction, hoped to be completed by next summer, includes no exchange of cash and must undergo regulatory review.

Henry Ford CEO Bob Riney, who will lead the organization, said the joint venture will “expand health care services and deliver innovations in care — from prevention and early detection through the treatment of complex conditions — to more people and communities across our state.”

“I’m most excited about what we will bring to our communities,” Riney said Wednesday. “We are committed to population health and this will allow us to lift communities by really understanding their needs and meeting their needs together.”

Riney says they’re committed to maintaining the Catholic identity of the Ascension facilities.

Ascension Michigan’s southwest and northern hospitals will remain members of Ascension’s national health ministry.

The following facilities would be included in the deal:

• Ascension St. John Hospital
• Ascension River District Hospital
• Ascension Genesys Hospital
• Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Madison Heights Campus
• Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Warren Campus
• Ascension Providence Hospital, Novi Campus
• Ascension Brighton Center for Recovery
• Ascension Providence Hospital, Southfield Campus
• Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital
• Henry Ford Hospital
• Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital
• Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital
• Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital
• Henry Ford Macomb Hospital
• Henry Ford Jackson Hospital

Last year two of the other biggest healthcare systems in the state merged, as Metro Detroit-based Beaumont and Grand Rapids-based Spectrum combined to become Corewell Health.
