DETROIT (WWJ) -- An assistant Detroit high school football coach is facing a total of 17 counts, including attempted murder, for the alleged shooting of a mother and child in their home.
Aaron Wright, 32, was appeared in 36th District Court for an arraignment on Thursday on charges in connection to the incident on the evening of Monday, October 12.
Authorities allege that there was a fight involving children earlier in the day.
Wright, 32, then went to the home of the 33-year-old victim, on Farmsworth Street, at around 7 p.m.
The two adults argued, investigators said, as Wright stood on the front porch and the victim stood just inside the home.
During the argument, the 7-year-old victim was standing near her mother, in the living room. When the mom tried to close the door, investigators said Wright forced his way into the house, drew a handgun and fired, wounding both the mother and the child.
Wright fled the scene but was found and arrested following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department.
Both victims were taken to a hospital where the mom was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, and the daughter was treated for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Wright has been charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office with assault with intent to murder, first degree home invasion, and eight counts of felony firearm.
"This is beyond outrageous. When in the world did it become okay for an adult to introduce a firearm into an argument between two young children?" said Worthy, in a statement.
"The defendant we are charging today with 17 counts is an assistant football coach at a Detroit high school. Let that sink in. He decides, allegedly, to settle this dispute with his daughter by going to the home of the other child and shooting her and her mother. We will make sure that the only football games he is involved in the future is as a spectator watching it on a TV screen."
Wright was arraigned via video Thursday afternoon and ordered held on a $250,000 bond.
There is no update on the victims' conditions at this time, but both were expected to recover.
