NEWAYGO COUNTY (WWJ) - A homemade bomb left on the side of the road was found in Newaygo County on Monday, authorities in West Michigan confirmed.

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office said via social media that a concerned citizen found the suspicious device along a stretch of road northwest of Grand Rapids and put it into a bucket before brining it to the Newaygo Police Department.

Authorities said the citizen believed it could be a homemade firework, but police -- who called in the sheriff's office as the device was found outside city limits -- determined it was not a firework of any kind.

The sheriff's office said on social media that all roads around city hall were closed as the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was requested to help investigate the device.

It was taken to a secure location and detonated; MSP later confirmed it was a homemade bomb.

Officials were led to where the citizen found the device and used a K-9 trained to detect explosive devices to canvas the area -- the sheriff's office said no other suspicious items were found.

Authorities put out a warning on social media to remind the public to leave any suspicious packages or devices alone and call 911.
