NORTHVILLE (WWJ) -- This Friday is the start of another season of horse racing -- and horse race betting -- at Northville Downs.

Northville Downs will kick off its 52-date live race schedule at 7 p.m., Apr. 7, and will also mark the 90th anniversary of horse race betting in Michigan, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).

"Horse racing was the first form of legal gambling in Michigan," said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. The first race licensed for betting was held Sept. 2, 1933, at the former State Fairgrounds in Detroit.

Williams also expressed his wishes for "a successful season" and congratulated the horse racing industry on its accomplishments over the past 90 years.

Races will be run on Fridays and Saturdays through to Sept. 30, and post time is 7 p.m. Each scheduled day must offer at least eight and no more than 16 live horse races.

Northville Downs also simulcast races to and from the track and may offer options for betting on simulcast races, except on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
