It's felt like fall in Metro Detroit and this weekend looks like 'great tailgating weather' for football fans. But how long will it last?

(WWJ) – If you step outside, it feels like fall has finally arrived in Metro Detroit.

With temperatures in the lower 60s, Wednesday was one of the coolest days we've seen in the area since the middle of June.

And while it has felt like prime weather for football and hot cider, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says we haven't quite seen the end of warm weather just yet.

"It's hard to keep it this cool this early in September through the rest of the fall," Thompson told WWJ's Tony Ortiz on this week's Weather Wednesday segment. "So it almost always will warm up at some point, and we do expect many upcoming days to be in the 70s."

Thompson says he can't rule out a few days reaching the 80s in the coming weeks and months.

As for this weekend, Thompson says it looks to be "pretty nice tailgating weather" for folks heading to games at Michigan, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the low or mid-70s, according to Thompson, but fans will likely stay dry, despite a small chance of showers that could "sneak on in later in the day."

Tailgaters heading downtown Detroit for the Lions' home opener on Sunday, however, could have to deal with a little more rain, as temperatures will be in the mid-60s with a 60% chance of rain, according to AccuWeather.
