How donating your leftover Halloween candy in Oakland County can support U.S. troops

(WWJ) Whether your kids hit the jackpot with Halloween candy but you're trying to prevent cavities, or your usual stampede of trick-or-treaters was a bit smaller this year, you may be wondering what you can do with your sudden surplus of sweets.

Thankfully, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office will gladly take that extra candy off your hands -- for a good cause, of course.

The sheriff’s office is accepting candy as part of the 12th annual Treats for Troops collection, which will be shipped out to send encouragement and express gratitude to U.S. troops stationed overseas.

“Treats for Troops is a great way parents can participate in a community service project with their kids while showing our troops we support them back home,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said.

The candy can be dropped off at any of the sheriff's office substations around Oakland County from Nov. 1 through Nov. 5:

-Brandon Township substation, 15 South Street in Ortonville, 48462
-Commerce Township substation, 2401 Glengary Rd., Commerce Township
-Highland Township substation, 165 N. John St., Highland Township
-Independence Township substation, 6560 Citation Drive, Independence Township
-Orion Township substation, 2525 Joslyn Rd., Lake Orion
-Oxford Township substation, 310 Dunlap Rd., Oxford

-OCSO Headquarters, 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Building 38 E. Pontiac

Donations can also be delivered through one designated volunteer at a time to the sheriff's office headquarters in Pontiac no later than Friday at 4 p.m.
