SOUTHGATE (WWJ) – Many residents are displaced after a large fire at a Downriver senior living center.
The fire broke out some time before 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Meadows of Southgate Senior Living Community on Allen Road north of Pennsylvania Road.
Multiple units were reportedly destroyed in the fire as video from the scene shows massive flames and smoke billowing out of the top of the building and smoke can be seen for miles.
While it is not clear whether anyone was injured, none were immediately reported.
WWJ's Ryan Marshall reported from the scene about 60 residents were taken to a nearby senior center, but authorities were still working to account for others.
It is not clear how many people live at the complex.
While no cause of the fire has been determined, some residents believe it may have been started by a lit cigarette that was left on a deck.
At least one first responder was reportedly taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
WWJ Traffic reporter Jim Hughes says traffic is heavy in the area, which should be avoided as crews work to extinguish the blaze.
