HURON CO. (WWJ) The Huron County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a phone scam where victims are losing thousands of dollars.

The Sheriff’s Office said it had received complaints from multiple victims who had fallen prey to the scam. They told the Sheriff they had all received a call from a man who identified himself as Deputy Kevin Wade.

The fake deputy told victims he had active warrants out for them and they needed to go buy $1,500 of gift cards, then give him a number off of those cards so he could “clear up the warrant.”

The same scammer pulled this in late March. In that incident, he took $3,000 from multiple victims.

The Sheriff said, this time around, at least one person fell for the scam and lost $1,500. The suspect made at least three calls, police said. They said they could learn of more victims upon further investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office said if you ever receive a call from the Deputy Kevin Wade, or any other suspicious person, hang up immediately and report it to your local police department or central dispatch.

“When in doubt,” a Sheriff’s Office release read, “law enforcement will be happy to sort out what is or isn’t legit.”

The number being used for the scam is (989) 323-5047. The Sheriff’s Office said legitimate law enforcement would never operate or “do business” the way fake Deputy Wade does.
