Northbound I-75 shut down at Dixie Highway in Independence Township -- in northern Oakland County -- for the Friday morning commute following crashes that initially sent two people to the hospital and were later determined to have caused a fatality.
Police say a Chevy Trailblazer was traveling northbound at about 2:30 a.m. Friday when the driver lost control and slammed into a ditch near Grange Hall Road in Holly Township.
A semi-truck tried to avoid the crash and also rolled into a ditch. And in the aftermath of those crashes, another driver slammed into another car and died at the scene. Details are still unfolding.
Drivers of both vehicles were unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene and both were transported to the hospital. There's no word on what caused the initial crash, as the weather was cold, but clear and without new snow.
The freeway was closed for several hours, reopening to traffic at around 11:30 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
