(WWJ) Some very busy freeway ramps are now closed, long-term, as part of the 'Restore I-94' constructions project.

The eastbound I-94 ramps to both northbound and southbound Southfield Freeway (M-39), and the westbound I-94 ramps to the Southfield Freeway are shut down.

This took effect at around 9 a.m. Monday (6/8), and the ramps will remain closed until May of 2027, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

It's estimated that nearly 60,000 drivers will be impacted each day.

MDOT's suggested detour is westbound US-12.

Alternatively, drivers can go further west on I-94 to Telegraph Rd. to Eastbound US-12.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead, as extra time will be required for this detour while emergency bridge work is blocking a lane on Telegraph Rd.

MDOT said these ramp closures are needed as crews will be reconstructing the Southfield freeway bridge over Ecorse Creek between I-94 and Outer Drive.

This all comes with many other freeway and ramp closures already in place for ongoing projects around Metro Detroit.

The big one for many drivers: Eastbound I-696 remains completely closed through next fall, with multiple ramp closures in place for westbound drivers. This is expected to remain in place until late fall 2026. [Get more on the 696 project, here.]
