DETROIT (WWJ) -- If your weekend plans take you to or around the city of Detroit, take note.
Starting Friday evening, April 11, I-94 will be closed in both directions between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue (M-3) starting at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the closer will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, continuing until 5 a.m. Monday. April 14.
MDOT said the closure is necessary as crews remove the old McClellan Avenue overpass above I-94, which runs from Harper over I-94 to Gratiot Ave.
Originally built in 1957, the McClellan Avenue overpass was closed in March of 2024 due to poor structural conditions. MDOT said the overpass will not be replaced due to the future upgrades to the I-94/M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) interchange.
During the weekend closure, westbound I-94 through traffic will be detoured via southbound M-3 and northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94. All eastbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 and northbound M-3 back to eastbound I-94.
Prior to the freeway closure, all entrance ramps to westbound I-94 will be closed from Cadieux Road to M-3. All entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 from West Grand Boulevard to M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) will be closed. All ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
The planned roadwork is weather-permitting.
