CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- While lane closures along I-94 in Chesterfield Township have been a source of stress for drivers since early March, a new work zone may add to that frustration.

Starting at 7 a.m., Thursday, May 4, the westbound I-94 exit ramp to 23 Mile Rd. and the 23 Mile Rd. entrance ramp to eastbound I-94 will both be closed for at least three weeks.

Drivers are encouraged to use Gratiot Ave. and the ramps at 26 Mile as an alternate route.

Crews will be out working on pavement repairs and completing a partial reconstruction of the interchange.

The scheduled construction will also affect 23 Mile between Gratiot and Foster Rd., where traffic will be reduced to one lane while the ramp closures are set up, then reopen to two lanes.

The current I-94 lane closures between New Haven Rd. and County Line Rd. will also continue until Sunday, May 7.

According to MDOT, this work is part of a $32.5 million project on I-94 that includes milling and resurfacing six miles of freeway, bridge work at six locations, traffic signal upgrades and partial ramp reconstruction.
