NOVI (WWJ) – Heads up for driver’s in Metro Detroit this weekend – one of the busiest stretches of highway will be down to just one lane, beginning Friday night.
MDOT work crews will have I-96 down to one lane in each direction through the work zone between the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange and Kent Lake Road.
Provided the weather cooperates, eastbound I-96 will have one lane open from Kent Lake Road to Wixom Road from Friday at 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday. All the on and off ramps will remain open during this time.
On the westbound side, the freeway will be down to one lane from Beck Road to Kent Lake from 6 a.m. Saturday until 8 p.m. Sunday. MDOT says there will be intermittent ramp closures to and from Wixom, Milford and Kent Lake Roads.
After this weekend, the following lane restrictions will be in place:
• Eastbound I-96 will have three lanes open during rush hours of 6-9 a.m. and 3-8 p.m. and two lanes open during off-peak hours of 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and 8 p.m.-6 a.m.
• Westbound I-96 will have three lanes open only during afternoon rush hours of 3-8 p.m. and two lanes open from 8-3 p.m.
This weekend’s work is part of the I-96 Flex Route project that includes rebuilding the freeway, rebuilding the median shoulders for use during peak periods, sign upgrades, and active traffic management installation.
