(WWJ) A young man from Illinois is facing a string of felony charges in Michigan's Upper Peninsula after a multi-day manhunt that began with a high-speed chased and an alleged attempt to run down a state trooper.
According to Michigan State Police, the investigation began last Tuesday, July 14, when Gogebic County deputies attempted to pull over the driver of a vehicle that was reported stolen.
The driver — identified by police as 22-year-old Daniel Allard of Woodridge, Illinois — fled, leading deputies on a pursuit that was eventually called off for safety reasons.
Anticipating the vehicle's path, a trooper from the MSP Wakefield Post positioned himself on M-28 in Ontonagon County, near Bergland, to deploy stop-sticks.
As the trooper went to retrieve the device from the roadway after the initial chase ended, Allard's vehicle suddenly appeared driving eastbound at a high rate of speed. According to authorities, Allard intentionally changed lanes and drove directly at the trooper. The trooper narrowly avoided being struck by running down a highway embankment, and the vehicle sped out of sight. Law enforcement heavily searched Bergland Township later that day but could not immediately locate the suspect.
The search culminated two days later on July 16, 2026, when state police received tips placing Allard in the L’Anse Township area.
Investigators discovered he had broken into an unoccupied cabin near US-41 and Dog Patch Road.
State Police personnel responded to the property and safely took Allard into custody while he was still inside the cabin.
Authorities allege that while on the property, Allard was armed with a gun when he damaged a cabin window to get inside, cut a garden hose to siphon gasoline from an off-road vehicle.
Allard was lodged in the Baraga County Jail and arraigned on Friday, July 17, in the 97th District Court.
He was charged with first-degree home invasion, carrying a concealed weapon, and malicious destruction of property under $200.
Allard's bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety, and his next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 4.
In addition to the Baraga County charges, Allard faces counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and resisting or obstructing a police officer in Ontonagon County, as well as fleeing and eluding charges in Gogebic County.
MSP said numerous regional and state agencies assisted in the investigation and arrest, including multiple sheriff's offices, specialized state police units, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
