OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - A young man from Illinois allegedly told police he became upset and stabbed an underage Springfield Township girl after she wouldn't have sex with him, deputies said on Wednesday.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, detectives are seeking attempted murder charges against the suspect, an 18-year-old Monmouth, Ill. man, after he stabbed the 14-year-old victim multiple times.

Deputies said the incident occurred just after midnight on Wednesday morning, at the victim's home in the 6000 block of N. Bay in Springfield Township.

Authorities were called to home after receiving a call about a teen girl who had sustained several stab wounds.

After arriving on scene, deputies found the 14-year-old girl on the floor inside the home, bleeding from multiple knife wounds on her back and midsection. The victim was taken to a local hospital where deputies said she is in critical, but stable condition.

She was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday morning, the sheriff's office added.

Upon a preliminary investigation, the victim was able to tell authorities that she was attacked by an 18-year-old suspect from Illinois that she met on a social media site.

According to her statement, the victim said the man had discussed coming to Michigan to meet her. When he arrived at her home, he got angry when the victim refused to have sex with him and assaulted her with an 8-inch knife before leaving the scene.

Officials said the suspect had recently bought the knife hours before on Tuesday in White Lake Township.

The girl's parents were not home, but a younger sibling was in their room sleeping during the time of the attack, deputies added. The victim was bale to contact both parents, who rushed home and called 911.

Waterford Township Police officers were able to arrest the suspect a short while later after he contacted 911. The suspect was transferred over to the custody of Oakland County deputies where he admitted to stabbing the girl after he realized she wouldn't have sex with him.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard warned in a prepared statement that meeting people from online can be very dangerous as their motivations may not be clear.

"Anytime you meet someone via the internet, it is always a very good idea to do so in a public setting and preferably have someone else with you," the sheriff said.

“Do not share personal information like where you live or other items that will allow a person to locate or track you," Bouchard added. "In this situation, this was a juvenile and for so many reasons meeting someone in person is a dangerous choice, and we always discourage it.”

The suspect is currently being held at the Oakland County Jail awaiting his arraignment.
