(WWJ) Police in Oakland County are investigating the case of a phony fundraiser.

In late September, Troy Police got a call from a resident, on Cliffside Drive, who reported that he'd been having trouble logging into his Facebook account.

The victim discovered that someone gained access to the account, changed the password, and set up an online fundraising campaign advising his friends that he has cancer and needs money for treatment, police said.

So far, police said $1,785 has been raised toward a $4,500 goal.

And, while it's certainly nice that the man's friends stepped up to help, he told police that he does not have cancer.

The victim told investigators that he didn't give anyone permission to set up the fundraiser, and he doesn't know how the scammer was able to gain access to his account.

There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone with information can call Troy Police at 248-524-3477.
