DETROIT (WWJ) -- An 'incoherent' 29-year-old man stole a Detroit ambulance and drove it on the Lodge Freeway before getting caught.
At around 11 p.m. Thursday, Detroit police discovered the emergency vehicle was stolen.
Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police Department said they began tracking the stolen EMS rig as it entered the Lodge Freeway.
Officers were able to follow the vehicle and stop it on Monica Street on the city's northwest side.
Inside the car was one male who was able to be removed without incident, said officials.
Troopers attempted to get the name of the suspect and the reason why he was in the EMS rig but officials said he was incoherent and unable to answer.
They eventually identified the suspect as a 29-year-old male from Detroit by using a portable fingerprint scanner. Officers were also able to find that the man has a history of mental illness.
The suspect was taken into custody.
