CALVIN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An Indiana man was killed after a deer was thrown into his vehicle from another crash.

Authorities say 20-year-old Alyssa Handschu, of Osceola, Indiana, was driving north on Cassopolis Road in Calvin Township around 7 p.m. Thursday night when she hit a deer. Calvin Township is in Cass County near the Michigan-Indiana border.

The impact propelled the deer through the windshield of a vehicle that was traveling south, triggering a second crash.

The driver of the second vehicle, 67-year-old Elkhart, Indiana resident Daniel Haskett, drove off the road after the deer crashed into his car.

Haskett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Handschu was not injured.

Authorities said alcohol didn’t appear to be a factor and that both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The crash is under investigation.
