DETROIT (WWJ) — Get ready, Detroit. The Giant Slide is coming back to Belle Isle this summer.
After going viral in the summer of 2022 when riders went flying — literally — down the massive slide, it is reportedly set to reopen this summer.
While no reopening date has been set in stone, the topic was discussed in front of Detroit City Council on Tuesday, with officials saying safety improvements will be made to the slide, according to The Detroit News.
Improvements will include a better landing surface than the rubber matting in place now, while the Michigan DNR, which operates the park and the slide, have improved the side curtain area. Officials are also working on boosting staff to instruct people how to properly ride it.
Crews working at the slide will also be “monitoring it constantly” and “have ways to keep it slow,” if riders are going too fast, according to the News.
The Giant Slide reopened in August 2022 after undergoing previous repairs and being shut down during the pandemic. But it resumed operations a few days later, drawing large crowds through the end of the summer.
Last spring a woman filed a lawsuit against the city of Detroit and the DNR, claiming her kids were injured on the slide in 2022.
