MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) -- An infant has died after a two-vehicle crash on Thursday morning in Macomb Township, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said emergency were called the the scene, at 25 Mile Road and Petunia Drive, just after 11 a.m. on Oct. 8, on reports of a head-on crash involving a Ford F-350 and a Ford Bronco Sport.
A preliminary investigation found that the Bronco was headed westbound on 25 Mile when the driver attempted to turn southbound onto Petunia Drive, entering the path of the eastbound F-350.
Bystanders immediately rushed to help after the crash, performing CPR on an unresponsive infant, who was properly secured in a rear child safety seat, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies and fire personnel arrived shortly after and continued life-saving procedures.
The infant was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to a higher-level trauma center, where the child later died.
Both drivers—a 35-year-old Chesterfield woman driving the Bronco and a 35-year-old Macomb Township man driving the pickup —reported minor injuries.
"The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest sympathies to the infant’s family and loved ones during this difficult time," the MCSO said, in a statement.
Officials said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
