MONROE (WWJ) — An investigation is ongoing in Monroe County after an inmate was found dead in his jail cell early Wednesday morning.
Corrections officers found the 56-year-old Toledo man unresponsive at the Macomb County Jail around 3:50 a.m. on March 5, according to the sheriff’s office.
The officers immediately began CPR and continued until members from the Monroe City Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance got to the scene.
After continued life-saving measures, the man was unable to be revived, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough says his office is “committed to a detailed and thorough investigation” and the man’s death remains under investigation.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s name and it was unclear how long he had been in the jail or what charges he was jailed on.
Officials did not reveal any information about a possible cause of death.
“The Sheriff’s Office is saddened at the loss of life and extends their condolences to the individual’s family,” Goodnough said in a press release.
