(WWJ) The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and law enforcement agencies are working to locate an inmate who was incorrectly released from a county jail in Ohio in March.
Christopher Bibbs, Jr., 21, is currently meant to be serving a four- to ten-year prison sentence in connection with a carjacking out of Wayne County.
Bibbs was originally incarcerated at the Thumb Correctional Facility in Lapeer in May of 2022. This past March, he was transported to a jail in Warren County, OH, where he stands accused of improper handling of a firearm in a vehicle, operating while intoxicated and lying to police.
On Mar. 23, the county jail contacted the MDOC to inform officials that Bibbs had mistakenly been released around 2 p.m., just after his court appearance. He was allowed to leave the Ohio jail on foot.
MDOC's Absconder Recovery and Intelligence Units immediately began working the case, along with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. Since Bibbs was released, authorities undertook a series of efforts to locate him, including working with his family.
Now, the MDOC is asking for the public's assistance.
Bibbs is believed to be in the Detroit area.
He is five feet, ten inches tall, weighs around 160 lbs. and has black hair and brown eyes. A tattoo on Bibbs' left forearm reads "only the strong survive."
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Bibbs, or who may have seen him, is urged to call 911 or the 24-hour tip hotline at 1-844-362-8477.
Citizens are cautioned not to approach Bibbs.
The MDOC will continue sharing updates on its social media accounts until the prisoner is back in custody.
