BATTLE CREEK (WWJ) - One man is dead after he was shot and killed while apparently breaking into an apartment in Southwest Michigan on Wednesday evening, police confirmed.
According to the Battle Creek Police Department, a caller dialed 911 around 9:41 p.m. and reported the incident at Georgetown Estates Apartments located at 1975 E. Columbia Ave. within the city.
When officers arrived on scene, they discovered the victim, 40-year-old Donald Guthrie of Fulton, with gunshot wounds. He was transported to the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he was pronounced dead.
According to their preliminary investigation, officers said Guthrie appeared to have forced his way into the apartment where a person inside open fired.
Police maintain that the shooter acted in self-defense -- their identity was not released. Authorities did not disclose what may have led Guthrie to break into the unit, but they did say detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
"The case will be sent to the Calhoun County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for a decision on charges after the investigation is complete," police added.
