(WWJ) A Michigan State Police trooper and a suspect suffered minor injuries during a scuffle in Ionia County Tuesday night.

Nathaniel Guy Peiffer, 22, is facing multple felony charges in connection with the incident involving a trooper from the MSP Lakeview Post.

According to officials with the MSP Sixth District, the trooper tried to make contact with Peiffer as the young Ionia man was walking in the roadway, wearing dark clothing, after dark on Feb. 6.

It's alleged that Peiffer ran from the trooper, and after a short foot chase began "actively resisting" arrest.

Police said Peiffer hit the trooper in the face and then placed him in a headlock.

He was ultimately taken into custody with help from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and Ionia Department of Public Safety, MSP said.

Both the trooper and the suspect were treated at Sparrow Hospital in Ionia for minor injuries.

Peiffer, who has a "lengthy criminal history," according to MSP, was lodged at the Ionia County Jail on four counts of resisting and obstructing police, possession of methamphetamine, resisting and obstructing causing injury, and assault by strangulation.
