With car theft on the rise in Michigan, criminals are targeting Kias and Hyundais. Why? TikTok could be to blame.

(WWJ) – Police have told WWJ in the past the most commonly targeted vehicles for car thieves are Dodge Chargers, Jeep Cherokees and Ford F-150s.

But recently, there’s been a sharp rise in thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles – specifically those made between 2010 and 2021. Why? One former Michigan State Police detective tells WWJ’s Zach Clark on a new Daily J it can be traced back to a group of young men on TikTok called the “Kia Boys.”

This episode looks at the combination of social media and outdated technology in cars that have driven the recent spike in car thefts.
