HOWELL, Mich. (WWJ) -- Visiting Michigan on Wednesday, Vice President J.D. Vance said the Trump administration would be happy to send National Guard troops to the City of Detroit.
Speaking at an auto supplier in Howell, Vance said one of the proudest things President Donald Trump has done is send the National Guard into Washington D.C. and Memphis.
"My one message to (Michigan Gov.) Gretchen Whitmer is: Look, the City of Detroit we know has got some serious crime problems, and we know that it is the people in Detroit who suffer the most when crime is allowed to run rampant all over city streets," Vance said. "Gretchen, we are happy to send the National Guard to Detroit, Michigan. All you gotta do is ask."
That comments earned an enthusiastic round of applause from Vance's crowd of supporters.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said earlier this week no one in the White House or with the U.S. Justice Department has mentioned a need to bring the National Guard to Detroit.
Wednesday afternoon, Vance took a tour of Hatch Stamping, located about 50 miles northwest of Detroit, and posed for photos with workers.
Along with crime, Vance spoke about the assassination and legacy of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, the battle against fentanyl overdoses, and jobs and wages, and tax cuts.
The primary reason for Vance's speaking tour: to tout passage of the Trump Administration's "big, beautiful" budget bill.
"These working families tax cuts, they just don't cut your taxes — they certainly do — they reward companies for building and investing in the United State of America," Vance said. "Because, isn't it nice to have an administration that is fighting for the businesses and the workers that are building right here at home, rather than shipping our jobs off the Asia or Mexico."
