DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man has been found guilty in the 2025 death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, 25-year-old Michael Yharbrough was convicted by a jury on Monday of on charges of felony murder, torture and first degree child abuse.

Brianna Simmons, the child's mother, pleaded guilty to second degree child abuse.

Simmons, 36, received a sentence of three years probation, with the first 12 months served in the Wayne County Jail.

Prosecutors said Simmons testified against Yharbrough as part of the agreement.

According to investigators, the child died on March 1, 2025, in the couple's home on Detroit's west side.

Prosecutors said that Yharbrough was the one who injured and killed the boy, and that his mother ignored ongoing abuse, trying to hide the boys injuries over time.

Simmons is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23.

Yharbrough sentencing is set for June 26.
