DETROIT (WWJ) — A suspect is in critical condition after shooting himself on Detroit's west side when confronted by police Monday afternoon following a kidnapping in Garden City.
Detroit police officers were called to a home on Penrod near Warren and the Southfield Freeway regarding a possible kidnapping involving a 13-year-old child from Garden City.
A Detroit police spokesperson tells WWJ the suspect, a man in his 40s whose name has not been released, had befriended the teen on social media, which led to an in-person meeting.
The suspect picked the victim up and brought them to the location on Penrod. There, the teen was able to make contact with a family member, who immediately called the Detroit Police Department.
Authorities rushed to the scene and made contact with the suspect, who ran into a back room and shot himself, according to police.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, as of Monday evening.
The victim is safe and has been reunited with their family, according to police.
Authorities did not say exactly when or where the alleged kidnapping happened. The case remains under investigation by DPD’s 6th Precinct Detective Unit.
