3 kids safe, man arrested after domestic incident, police standoff in northwest Detroit

(WWJ) An armed man who'd barricaded himself in a home — initially with children inside — on Detroit's northwest side has turned himself in.

No injuries were reported as the tense standoff, on Sorrento north of 7 Mile Rd. and east of Outer Drive, came to a peaceful conclusion just before 8 a.m.

Reporting from the scene earlier Friday morning, WWJ's Mike Campbell said three kids and a woman were released from the home unharmed, and that a SWAT team had the house surrounded.

There is now one suspect in custody as police continue to work the scene.

Police said an argument between a husband and wife turned violent with the man — who was armed with a handgun — was threatening to hurt the wife and kids. The woman called 911, and her husband hid in the basement.

DPD Twelfth Precinct Commander Kurt Worboys said, after talking with negotiators and family, the man just decided to give up.

What happens next?

"He's going to be taken to the DDC for processing," Worboys told Campbell. "...The investigators will then search the home; make sure that it's secure."

"It will probably be turned over to (the) domestic violence (unit) for them to handle, and decide if the wife wants to push forward with prosecution, and go from there," he added.

The suspect's name has not been released, with any possible charges pending.

Area residents should expect to see a continued police presence in the area Friday as the investigation is completed.
