Lake Michigan car ferry, S.S. Badger, pauses service due to COVID-19

(WWJ) -- Anyone looking to cross Lake Michigan on the S.S. Badger may have to wait a while.

The car ferry that connects Michigan and Wisconsin has temporarily suspended operations because of the coronavirus.

A message posted on the S.S. Badger website says "for the safety of our Passengers and Crew we have suspended sailings until August 19th" after a crew member was exposed to and later tested positive for COVID-19.

The ship, which has been making runs across the Big Lake since 1992, shuttles passengers and their vehicles between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

According to the Badger's website, passengers have been required to wear masks while boarding the ship, and any time they are indoors. Passengers are not required to wear masks while outdoors, but social distancing is required where possible.

Barring any setbacks, the Badger is expected to be back up and running on Thursday.
