GOODLAND TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A 30-year-old Lapeer County woman drowned while trying to rescue her dog from a freezing pond, the sheriff’s office said.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a rural residential area along Armstrong Road in Goodland Township for a possible drowning on Wednesday, December 11th, around 5:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, deputies noticed a pond that was iced-over except for an area of open water toward the center; the sheriff’s office said.
The family dog, apparently deceased, was seen floating in the water.
Members of Goodland, Imlay City, Arcadia and Attica fire departments used a paddle boat to paddle to the area of open water— breaking the one-inch-thick ice along the way, the sheriff’s office said.
Fire crews found the body of the homeowner— who had apparently went onto the ice to save her dog from the frigid water.
She was rushed to McLaren/Lapeer Hospital where lifesaving efforts took place. She was pronounced dead at 7:49 p.m. Her name was not released.
Goodland Township is located about 16 miles west of Lapeer.
