VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An early morning blaze engulfed an apartment building in Wayne County on Tuesday morning -- the same complex that became the center of international attention after a fighter jet crashed into its parking lot last month.

Van Buren Township Police confirmed with WWJ at 6:30 a.m. that first responders were working the scene of large structure fire at the Waverly on the Lake Apartments at Denton Road and Marine Cove, in the area of I-94 and Rawsonville.

As of 6:45 a.m., the fire was extinguished with six units destroyed, officials told WWJ.

Reports stated the third floor of a building within the complex was on fire with heavy smoke pouring from the roof.

It is currently unknown if there are any injuries.

Firefighters from Romulus, Metro Airport, Ypsilanti Twp., Belleville and Canton Twp. have been called in to assist with the fire.

No other details have been released. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. WWJ's Charlie Langton is currently on the way to the scene to learn more.

The same complex became the center of worldwide attention after a vintage fighter jet, a MiG-23 demonstration plane, crashed into the parking lot during the annual Thunder Over Michigan air show at nearby Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti on Aug. 13.

Miraculously, there were no injuries in that incident as the two pilots ejected and the plane struck unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot, officials said.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
