Lenawee County woman arrested, charged with drunk driving in August crash that killed 72-year-old man

TECUMSEH TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A Lenwawee County woman was arrested and charged with a summertime drunk-driving crash that killed a 72-year-old man and left a woman in critical condition, State Police said.

According to a social media statement; Michigan State Police arrested Holly Dewitt Schmidt, 38 of Tecumseh, without incident and housed her at the Lenawee County Jail on Wednesday, December 11th.

She was charged with one count of operating while intoxicated causing death and one count of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

Schmidt was arraigned on Thursday, December 12th. She was given a $75,000 bond.

Michigan State Police Monroe Post troopers were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash in Tecumseh Township on Wednesday, August 14th around 9:30 p.m. Their preliminary on-site investigation revealed the victims’ GMC Terrain was heading northbound on Tecumseh Clinton Highway near Allen Road, when Schmidt struck them in her blue Jeep Wrangler while traveling southbound; State Police said.

The driver of the GMC, a 72-year-old Clinton man, died from his injuries in the crash. The passenger, a 75-year-old Clinton woman, was life-flighted in critical condition to University of Michigan Hospital.

Schmidt cooperated with the investigation and was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital for minor injuries, State Police said.

The names of the victims were not released, nor their relationship to each other.

The highway was shut down for several hours.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department, the Village of Clinton Police Department, Tecumseh Police Department, Tecumseh Fire Department, Clinton Township Fire Department, Lenawee Community Ambulance and University of Michigan Survival Flight.

Tecumseh is located about 28 miles south of Ann Arbor.
