LIVONIA (WWJ) – A Livonia man is facing multiple charges, including ethnic intimidation, for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old boy at a rec center earlier this month.
Moeez Irfan, 29, is due in court on Thursday for a probable cause hearing after he was arraigned on charges of ethnic intimidation, aggravated assault, resisting and obstructing police and habitual offender, third offense.
The charges stem from an alleged attack on a teen at the Kirksey Recreation Center on Hubbard back on June 8.
Officers were called to the rec center that day after Irfan allegedly bumped into the 13-year-old on a stairway, hurled racial slurs at him and then hit him in the head multiple times, according to the Livonia Police Department.
When officers tried to take Irfan into custody, he resisted but was eventually subdued by multiple officers and arrested. He was taken to the Livonia Police Department before subsequently being taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, where he was admitted.
The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries sustained during the assault.
A detective conducted a follow-up investigation, and a warrant request was submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Irfan was released from the hospital on June 16. He was then arrested and arraigned in Livonia’s 16th District Court. He was taken to the Wayne County Jail, where he remains in custody. His bond was set at $50,000 or 10%.
