(WWJ) -- A man receives a multi-million dollar judgement against a Clinton Township Police officer accused of using excessive force.
A federal jury awarded Daniel Reiff $4 million in compensatory and $50 thousand in punitive damages.
Authorities say Clinton Township Police officer Broc Setty responded to a non-emergency call about a suspicious person. Setty reportedly punched Reiff in the face, causing his eyeball to rupture. Medical testimony described the injury as the inside of Reiff’s eye being “squished like a grape.”
Reiff also suffered multiple facial fractures that required numerous surgeries and now lives with permanent hardware and screws in his face. His attorneys say he's been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the incident.
“This verdict is about accountability and equal justice under the law,” said Michael Jones, trial counsel for Reiff. “This was a non-emergency call. There was no justification for what happened. The jury made clear that no one is disposable, no one is beneath the Constitution, and police officers do not get a free pass to use violence out of anger or frustration.”
