DETROIT (WWJ) -- The northbound Lodge Freeway in Detroit was closed for hours during Wednesday's morning commute after a crash caused a semi truck to leak over 200 gallons of diesel fuel along the roadway.
Further complicating matters, state police said they located an abandoned Saab with the driver, who allegedly caused the crash, nowhere to be found.
"It's kind of a wild scene here,' WWJ's Charlie Langton said at crash located on northbound M-10, closer to 8 Mile. Troopers had the freeway closed at 7 Mile as they investigated.
According to troopers, multiple callers reported a crash involving a semi truck blocking the roadway at around 3:30 a.m. on December 13. When state police arrived at the scene, they discovered an abandoned black Saab 93 blocking the right and center lane and a semi truck on the right shoulder.
Their preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the Saab struck the semi before the driver got out of the vehicle and was seen running from the area.
"Now, the semi truck was leaking fuel -- about 200 gallons of its diesel fuel --completely covering the northbound Lodge," Langton added.
Numerous Detroit Fire Department trucks assisted police with clean up efforts, including a row of tow trucks and a number of personnel who put down an absorbent to get as much of the fuel off the freeway.
MSP said there were no reported injuries in the crash and the suspect driver remains on the run.
“This is another example of a driver turning a crash into something more serious," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw state in an update to X. “If you are involved in a crash, stop and notify police. It really is that simple.”
Just after 6 a.m., Langton said authorities just towed away from Saab.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. No other details were released.
