(WWJ) -- Wednesday will be an exciting time for stargazers as they will be able to get a look at the first full moon of summer -- known as a super moon.

This phenomenon happens when the moon's closest point to the earth in its orbit coincides roughly with the full moon phase.

"There's an optical illusion that goes into effect that makes the moon look just gigantic," said Michael Narlock, head of astronomy at Cranbrook Institute of Science.

No need for a telescope tomorrow

And because of this, there's no need for a telescope on Wednesday as it will appear pretty easily to the naked eye, said Narlock.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. the moon will be at its biggest.

It will be about 16% brighter than a regular full moon, to be exact.

"You will see a big, beautiful, bright moon Wednesday," said Narlock.

Some of the other names this moon has garnered through the years include Salmon Moon, Berry Moon and Halfway Summer Moon.
