DETROIT (WWJ) A Lyft driver was charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder and other crimes for allegedly causing a crash that killed a couple riding in his car.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Theopris Mays, 40, of Herndon, Virginia in the deaths of Andre Boynton, 60, and Carla Boynton, 57. Both victims resided in Durham, North Carolina.
Prosecutors said the crash happened on February 22, around 10:15 a.m. in Midtown Detroit-- in the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard and I-94. Mays allegedly crashed through the loading dock door after he lost control of his vehicle while driving at a high rate of speed.
He ran away from the scene, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, officers found the Boyntons "trapped inside the vehicle and unresponsive." First responders pronounced them dead at the scene.
Officers arrested Mays shortly after the crash.
Mays was also charged with one count of Reckless Driving Causing Death and one count of Leaving the Scene of an At-Fault Accident--Causing Death.
He was arraigned on February 25 in 36th District Court. The judge set his bond at $500,000 cash/surety. He is due back in court on March 5.
